The 1957 album "Blue Train" was the result of an agreement between Blue Note founder Alfred Lion and John Coltrane. In return for not only being available to the Miles Davis Band, but also working as a session musician for countless other titles on the label, Coltrane was promised an album of his own. "Blue Train" became the real solo breakthrough for the man with the angry tenor saxophone

In addition to John Coltrane, we hear Lee Morgan (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Kenny Drew (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums). The latter two may be best known as Miles Davis' rhythm section. The result was one of the most important jazz albums of the 1950s and certainly the most important Coltrane album.
