GuruGuru Brain Records

Founded in Tokyo in 2014 by Go and Tomo of Kikagaku Moyo, GuruGuru Brain has spent the last decade quietly building one of the most distinctive catalogues in independent music. The label has moved with its founders — Tokyo to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and now Fukuoka — and that restless, boundary-crossing spirit runs through everything it releases.

The GuruGuru Brain sound is genuinely hard to pin down, which is exactly the point. Asian musical traditions collide with psychedelic rock, dub, spiritual jazz and avant-garde experimentation in ways that feel organic rather than contrived. This is music for open ears — records that reveal themselves slowly and reward repeated listening.

The label's most celebrated act is Kikagaku Moyo, whose hypnotic, lysergic sound brought international attention to the label before the band's dissolution in 2023. But GuruGuru Brain extends well beyond them. Maya Ongaku bring a more minimalist, electronic sensibility — their records sit somewhere between ambient, folk and kosmische. Mong Tong, from Taiwan, push further into psychedelic experimentation with a distinctly East Asian palette. Khana Bierbood bring Thai folk and rock into the mix. The breadth is remarkable.
