In the realm of underground electronic music, few labels have maintained the mystique and creative integrity of Apnea Records. Founded in 2004 in Spain by Imek and Jose Luis Villalobos, Apnea has become synonymous with deep, hypnotic techno, electro-inspired beats, and soundscapes that push the limits of genre. Over more than two decades, it has carved out a niche for forward-thinking electronic music that resonates with DJs and collectors alike.
Apnea’s catalog spans a rich variety of styles — from deep techno and Detroit-influenced house to abstract electro and machine funk. The label’s releases have featured artists such as Kyle Hall, Hieroglyphic Being, Versalife, Damian Schwartz, and Dopplereffekt, many of whom are now regarded as important voices in the electronic underground.

A highlight in Apnea’s recent output is “Apnea XX,” a landmark double 12″ compilation celebrating the label’s 20th anniversary. This sprawling release brings together veteran innovators and newer talents, traversing a wide sonic spectrum that reflects Apnea’s evolution over time. Tracks range from abstract house and deep electro to more rhythmic techno explorations — making it both a retrospective and a statement of intent.
Other notable releases include Kyle Hall’s “Crimson Clouds” 12″ — a Detroit techno-infused work that connects classic electronic roots with modern textures — and Versalife’s “Parallax Effect” series, which explores broken rhythms and metallic, forward-thinking sounds. Hamatsuki’s “Sulitkveteba EP” brings a trippy acid-laden feel, while thematic compilations like “Sounds From the Northern Hemisphere” or the live recordings on “SOUNDS FROM THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE (2LP)” showcase the breadth of Apnea’s artistic vision.
